Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has inaugurated the state Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee with a charge to ensure best practices in the exploration of the Solid Minerals deposits in Abia State.
Governor Ikpeazu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Eme Okoro gave the Committee 7 Terms of reference including 1. Setting up a mechanism for the documentation, registration and institutionalization of Solid Minerals Mining Cooperatives in Abia State; 2. Explore the concept of clustering those Cooperatives as part of the philosophy for the strategic economic development of Abia State; 3. Advise Government on the potential for the setting up of a profitable State Mining Company.
Other terms of reference of the Committee include; 4. Explore the possibility of partnering with the Federal Government, other National and International Agencies engaged in Solid Minerals Development; 5. Suggest ways of eliminating illegal mining by documenting and registering illegal miners in Abia State; 6. Make any general or specific recommendation that will allow Abia State Government benefit maximally from Solid Minerals and 7. Furnish the Abia State Government with fortnightly activity reports.
The Committee, which has Dame Chimechefulam Nwoko, Permanent Secretary, Abia State Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals as Chairman and Sam Hart, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications as Secretary, has the following Members: Obioma Ezeogbulafor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade & Investment, Uchenna Onyeizu, SSA to the Governor on Environment, Chinenye Nwaogu, SSA to the Governor on Youth Development, Ethelbert Eze, Director Cooperatives, Ministry of Economic Development, Barr. Isaac Nwachukwu representing the Ministry of Justice and Chinedu Iro representing the Public Private Partnership Agency.
Responding after the inauguration on behalf of the Members of the Committee, the Chairman, Dame Chimechefulam Nwoko thanked the Governor for the confidence reposed in the Members of the Committee and promised that the Committee will get to work immediately to deliver on their mandate.
